BIOGRAPHY
Rodrigo Porras Garulo starts his 2024/25 Season with role and house debut as Manrico in IL TROVATORE at Staatsoper Stuttgart, after co-starring with Anna Netrebko in the acclaimed Daniela Kerck’s production of TURANDOT at International Maifestspiele Wiesbaden. Further plans for this Season include Calaf in the new Christof Loy’s TURANDOT at Theater Basel, his first portrayal of Verdi’s OTELLO at Theater Ulm, as well as his role revival of Rodolfo in LUISA MILLER at Theater Luzern under the baton of Jonathan Bloxham.
In the Season 2023/24 Mr. Porras Garulo debuted at Deutsche Oper Berlin and at State Opera Hamburg, singing Pinkerton in MADAMA BUTTERFLY under the baton of Francesco Ciampa and Calaf in TURANDOT under the baton of Axel Kober. Other highlights included the Tobias Kratzer‘s production of FLORENTINISCHE TRAGÖDIE at Norwegian National Opera Oslo singing the role of Guido Bardi and conducted by Edward Gardner, as well as his role of Prince in Heller-Lopes’ staging of RUSALKA at Ópera de Tenerife with Paul Daniel conducting the Orquesta Sinfónica Tenerife and as Tambourmajor in Martin G. Berger’s WOZZECK at Aalto Theater Essen under the baton of Roland Kluttig.
In the past Mr. Porras Garulo has appeared in the main roles of his repertoire at Teatro Alla Scala, Glyndebourne Festival, De National Opera Amsterdam, Opera Frankfurt, Opera Köln, State Opera Hannover, Berliner Philharmonie, Royal Albert Hall, State Opera Prague, Opera Leipzig, Hessian State Theater Wiesbaden, Gärtnerplatz Theater, Landestheater Linz, Festival Ljubljana, Latvian National Opera, Croatian National Theater Zagreb, Opera Tours, State Opera Astana, among others. He sung under the baton of some of the world’s leading conductors, including Charles Dutoit, Daniel Oren, Joana Mallwitz, Keri-Lynn Wilson, Dan Ettinger, Yoel Gamzou, Julia Jones, Marcus Poschner, Robin Ticciati, Ivan Ciampa, Ainars Rubikis, Robert Trevino, Alan Buribayev, Konstantin Trinks, Justin Brown, Roberto Rizzi Brignoli, Daniele Squeo, Johannes Willig, Takeshi Moriuchi, Kevin Edusei, Peter Halász and Vincenzo Milletarì.
Born in Mexico City, Rodrigo Porras Garulo studied voice at the University Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, with KS Helene Schneiderman, and attended private lessons with professor Antonio Carangelo. From 2010 to 2015 he was a company member of the Staatstheater Meiningen and from 2017 to 2020 of the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe. In 2019 he had the honour to give his debut at Teatro Alla Scala as the Duke in RIGOLETTO, co-starring the legendary Leo Nucci. Mr. Porras Garulo was nominated as Singer Of The Year by music critic Michael Stallknecht (Süddeutsche Zeitung, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Opernwelt) in Opernwelt Magazine due to his interpretation of Calaf in TURANDOT at State Theater Karlsruhe. He is a winner of the International Antonín Dvořák Singing Competition and scholarship holder of the Richard Wagner Association Würzburg.
